The yo-yo missed again, clacking against a wall behind him. Adrien took a breath, the soles of his boots digging further into the ground.

"I did what I had to," he cried out. "My part was slavery, Marinette! My part was torture!" Marinette's tear-stained frown was deep and furious, the corner of her mouth drooping to bare her lower teeth. Her face—her ears—were a bright, blinding red.

"A future with me is torture to you?!"

#the tragedy of sillynette's insistence that her story must revolve around an idealized romance is so personal to me.....#it's exactly what the show does in a meta sense right? so why not have it be diegetic?? it's a central part of the story and it's WRONG #(it's also not totally her fault. she was essentially groomed into a parasocial relationship with adrien by gabriel's marketing tactics)#but also the contrast in what both marinette and adrien consider to be “his part” is just... AAAUGHHHH #to adrien his role involved being abused and exploited and having to just let that happen to him.#to marinette his role was to finally fall in love with her after she finally “proved herself” as ladybug and to live happily ever after #also yeah the maribug lines are intentionally blurred. imagine this is after an identity reveal or something #thewarmembraceofshadow #rotten love square

#tw neil gaiman #respectfully how is the conclusion some people are coming to all of this “good or bad doesn't exist”#by all means use that as a comfort that the media you are consuming isn't 'tainted' by the creator #but if not for comfort then how is your main takeaway that you want everyone to know after someone has done horrible things #to be that that person can be good.#it's not an inaccurate statement most of the time but neither do i think it's an appropriate one at this time.#anyway where's that post that said “are people going to stop dickriding neil gaiman now or was the zionism not enough”#because yeah. i get some people are devastated by this news and if this is your first rodeo with liking a celebrity #then i suggest you step away from idolisation or the mindset that what someone shows online is who they are #because i understand objectively why you might feel that way and the inherent connection between art and artist #and i understand feeling like maybe some of that toxicity could have bleed into the creations #but if you're crushed just because you thought he was a good person i hope this is a lesson going forward #because the reaction should not be this intense. you should not be having parasocial relationships with anyone #in the end you don't and will never know them no matter how good you think they are #feel free to disagree. but this is my take and has been my take for a long time #and it has been my take on neil gaiman since i joined the fandom

I knew Dorothy Dunnett was a crazy crazy author from page 1 of Game of Kings, like that woman wrote what she wanted to write, cared not at all about hand holding or dumbing down her story to make it more palatable (or even marketable), and was of the "just read the books babes 🫰" approach when asked by fans to confirm or deny stuff that wasn't super clear in the story. Love her for that!

But something that makes it so much clearer to me that she was, very much, a crazy (compliment) author is the way she writes gelis in Scales of Gold. Abrasive female characters have never been popular, but to make the main female character in your series, in the first book where she has a major role, so unpleasant... and specifically unpleasant towards the main male character? I think it's so brave tbh! The ending of this book is so cruel, and it's a stinging slap in the face for both Nicholas and the reader. But Dorothy was still like "yeah well Nicholas is crazy in love with her, he doesn't want anyone else, that's the love of his life" and I don't even think it had anything to do with trusting her readers to see the vision and that they would enjoy the character development and slow burn of Nicholas and Gelis learning to love each other like normal people lol. Like that's the story she wanted to tell and that's how she wanted to tell it. And I'm sure Gelis had a lot of haters back in the day (and now), but I genuinely don't think Dorothy gave a fuck. Would have loved to discuss this over a bottle of scotch though

rly insane personal lore but the first fic i ever read that made me realize fanfiction could be a serious, legitimate art form was a one direction fic. truly i don’t know if i would be a fic writer if that band had not existed. such a strange mix of feelings in light of recent events!!
